Types of Computer Networks
LAN - Local Area Networks:
When computers are connected in a small geographical area e.g. within a building, that is referred to as LAN.
MAN - Metropolitan Area Network
When computers are connected in a slightly bigger geographical area e.g. a city, that is referred to as MAN.
WAN - Wide Area Network
When computers are connected in a large geographical area e.g. global, that is referred to as WAN.
VPN - Virtual Private Network
VPN is a network that uses primarily public telecommunication infrastructure, such as the internet, to provide remote offices or travelling users access to a central organizational network. Users must be authenticated. Often data is encrypted before sent over the network.
PAN - Personal Area Network
A PAN network is typically on an area of 20-30 feet. Typically involve mobile computer e.g. PDA. Wireless PAN's include bluetooth and infrared.
CAN - Campus Area Network
Larger network than LAN, usually in a university campus to establish among different computer labs, library, registration office and different academic units.
Internet - International connection of computers; all information available to anyone.
Intranet - Only restricted access but same technology as internet.
Extranet - Like intranet with some parts/sections availed for outsiders.
