What is a network and why/why not use them?

A computer network is 2 or more computers linked together for sharing of resources.

We use computer networks to:
  • Share data e.g. reports
  • Communication e.g. e-mail and IM's
  • Share equipment
  • Access internet connection
  • Store and access work anywhere
We face the following problems whilst using networks:
  • Insecurity: hackers
  • Main server fails - entire network affected
  • No privacy - espionage
  • Ease of virus spread
  • Expensive to set up
Common terms:
  • Client-computer - computers used by users to access data from server.
  • Server-computer - main computer that stores all data.
  • Workstation-computer - End terminal without a processor.
